Recently we had the opportunity to get our hands on a small parcel of some fascinating, historical bottlings of Madeira. Hailing form the small Portuguese island, the wines are Madeira are some of the most highly prized fortified wines in the world. The most unique hallmark of well made examples of this style is the ability to age in the bottle and become amazingly complex, which is something that producers the world over try to replicate. D’Oliveiras are one of the most historical and well know producers on the island, with production dating back to 1850, and are run today by Luis and Filipe D’Oliveira, the fifth generation of the family. When we came across bottlings from 1907 and 1927 we jumped at the chance to bring them into the portfolio. It’s not every day you have the chance to see wine over a century old! Even more pleasing is the see these wines now being enjoyed by the glass by guests coming to Cumbria at the 1 Michelin Star Askham Hall as a perfect partner to either cheese or the fire in the lounge.
